this is dexter, our girl dog named for my brother's wayward boy cat. she's the leader of our pack of dogs, the queen of her brothers. she came from the san francisco county shelter, relinquished by a family from the peninsula. the boyfriend (now the husband) and i went to the shelter to see about getting a dog; dexter came to the front of her cage and pushed her nose through to us. when we met with her in one of the visitation rooms, she bounded through the door and onto my lap, where she peed a little. we were marked, and she came home with us that day.
she's too smart; often we can see the wheels turning, even if the gears are only working toward, "food?".
